Which is the most technologically advance weapon in the world? This is a fascinating question considering how mechanised warfare has evolved over the years to contemporary weapons capable of mass destruction. Historically, man has used weapons in warfare, law and enforcement and criminal activities. And it therefore comes as no surprise that many countries go to long lengths to ensure they have the deadliest weapons. The article seeks to review some of the most technologically advanced weapons in the history of mankind based on three classifications; air, water and land.
Water – Sea-wolf class submarines
Submarines have roam the waters of the seven oceans since their inception in the first world war. The primary mission of submarines is to engage enemy war-ships and submarines. The most technologically advanced submarine has taken into account a combination of factors: stealthiness, score of offensiveness and other vital features. The most deadliest submarine has an efficient sonar system to be able to detect enemy submarines and can approach any enemy warship and submarine undetected.
The Sea-wolf class submarines of the USA take the slot of the most technologically advanced beast of the waters. These class of subs entered services in 1997 and were initially intended to reinstate the technology edge the U.S Navy enjoyed over the Soviet Navy until 1980’s when state espionage dethrone it. With a diving depth of 487 m, and fully stocked with 48 torpedoes, sub-Harpoon anti-ship missiles and tomahawk cruise missiles, the ship was designed to quietly go after typhoon class ballistic subs and Akula class attack submarines of the soviet union. The Sea-wolf sub prides itself as the quietest sub ever constructed and can cruise at 20 knots and not be detected. Furthermore, the subs are credited to as the deepest diving in the world and can still operate in polar conditions. The subs are powered by nuclear meaning they can go for a couple years without running out of fuel.
However, the manufacture of the Sea-wolf submarine was terminated after only three were produced due to the substantial manufacturing and maintenance costs the United States government faced.
Land – K2 Black Panther
A modern warfare is not complete without the use of tanks. The most sophisticated tank to date is the south Korean K2 Black Panther. The development of this remarkable tanker commenced in mid 1995 and the first prototype revealed in 2007. Currently, the black Panther is the most technologically advanced main battle tank and the most expensive in the world to date. The south Korean manufactured tank comes with undisclosed composite armor type and explosive armor modules.
K2 Black Panther is fitted with state-of-the-art countermeasures and protection systems that are similar to the M1A2 Abrahams. The tank is armed with the famous German 120-mm gun, similar to the one used in its fiercest closest competitor the Leopard 2A6 And Leopard 2A7 manufactured in Germany. K2 is also designed with very advanced fire control system which can automatically spot, track and fire low flying enemy choppers and vehicles.
The black panther is powered by a powerful 1500 horse power diesel engine. There is also a secondary gas turbine unit with 400 horse power that power on-board system when the main engine is switched off. The boogie wheel can be individually be controlled allowing the tank to align itself in any direction while the hydro-pneumatic suspension is very easy to maintain compared to the conventional one. Fitted with deep wading kit, these tanks can cross rivers or swamps up to 4 meters deep, a feature its predecessor lacked.
Air – F-22 Raptor
War strategists assert that battles are won from the air front and as such, country’s are competing to reign in the air. The fifth generation is the latest naming convention for the next generation jet fighter. This generation of jet fighter incorporates a number of technological advancement from the fourth generation aircraft. The most technologically advanced jet fighters must have the following features to their name to be considered as fifth generation jet fighters: stealthiness, state-of-the-art avionics, well integrated computer systems that encompass all other elements in the war theater. The Lockheed Martin F-22 Raptor is a premier Fifth generation jet fighter that roams the skies. The jet fighter is a twin engine highly manoeuvrable fighter jet that incorporates the latest stealth technology. The jet fighter, commenced its service with the U.S. Air Force in 2005, has revolutionised ground attacks , intelligence roles and electronic warfare. The versatility of the Lockheed Martin F-22 allows for surveillance, intelligence gathering, electronic attack missions making it one of the most multi-mission fighter jets in the U.S Air Force.
